A ‘reptilian’ coaster

The taipan is a particularly dangerous family of snakes, typical to Australia, known to be the most venomous snake on earth: a single bite is capable of injecting a quantity of venom sufficient to kill 100 adults and up to 250,000 mice!

These creatures, which evoke images of Australia and considerable fear, and are also known for their large size and rapid movements, have inspired Steel Taipan, the brand-new rollercoaster that debuted at Dreamworld theme park on Australia’s Gold Coast on December 15, a date which coincided also with the park’s 40th anniversary.

Commenting on the timing of the coaster’s grand opening, Dreamworld’s Chief  Executive, Greg Yong said: “We couldn’t think of a better gift for our 40th birthday than the opening of the biggest new attraction in Dreamworld’s history, offering a new, world-class thrill experience during the school holidays, and just in time for the Queensland’s borders re-opening.”

At 32 million Australian dollars, the ride is Dreamworld’s biggest-ever investment in a single attraction, and the southern hemisphere’s first triple launch coaster.

Manufactured by Mack Rides it is based on the Blue Fire launch coaster operating at Europa-Park, but with a number of significant modifications. For example, the new track is longer (1.2km of twists, turns, inversions and gut-lurching launches) and features a 39m tall twisted spike at the back end of the launch that riders travel backwards and forwards.
