Bright Winter Nights
17 July 2026/ The Illuminate Adelaide festival, now in its sixth edition, confirmed itself to be one of Australia’s fastest-growing events /
While for us in the Northern Hemisphere July is midsummer, for those living in the opposite hemisphere where seasons are mirrored compared to ours, this month is purely winter. In Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, winter is overall mild by our standards, but July still brings colder, longer, and certainly more melancholic evenings.
However, there is an initiative in the city that for a few years now has been livening up those very hours of July, encouraging families to leave their homes and experience city monuments and spaces in a different way. It is Illuminate Adelaide, an event held this year from July 1st to 19th that, by bringing together art, lights, music, and technology, transforms the city into a vast spectacle, as varied as it is engaging. Over 100 experiences (largely free of charge) were scattered across the city last month, brought by creatives and artists – Australian, but also international ones from nations like the Netherlands, Colombia, Japan, and Mexico -bringing joy to over 1.6 million visitors. It has been a success, highlighted by the fact that attendance has more than tripled compared to the first edition, simultaneously doubling the economic benefits for the city and South Australia as a whole, in terms of overnight stays and tourism spending, for example.

Roving Performances, Projections, Installations And More
But what do the Illuminate Adelaide experiences actually consist of? There are music events such as the Supersonic marathon and street performances like Birdmen, a fascinating roving performance of Dutch stilt walkers who amaze in the guise of birds up to 7 meters tall, and Mirror Me, which features performers in futuristic suits that appear to be made of mirrors interacting with the crowd, engaging them in dances and songs.
Meanwhile, a magical projection mapping show on the origins of life on Earth was set up across the grand facade of the city’s prestigious Government House, and an audiovisual experience could also be found in the installation Embrace, which celebrates human connection in a playful way, almost like a ring-a-ring-o’roses: by holding hands with the human figures in the installation, they gradually light up to spark a light and music show. Interactivity and play also merge with music in Piano Walk, another installation made of giant piano keys that create truly original melodies when jumped on.
Reinvented City Landmarks
Illuminate Adelaide also offers the intriguing aspect of allowing people to discover famous city locations at night in an entirely new light. This year, for instance, The Botanic Garden became the stage for Night Visions, an immersive journey transforming the garden’s natural splendor into a vibrant tapestry of cutting-edge light, lasers, projections, and immersive soundscapes. The city zoo also took part in Illuminate Adelaide with Universal Kingdom-Ice Age, a family-friendly immersive adventure blending puppetry, light and sound with visitors wandering through glowing glacial landscapes and discovering majestic mammoths, dinosaurs, thunderbirds and sabre-toothed tigers.

“Augmented Games” Interactive Gaming Flooring, A First for Australia
A highlight of this year’s event was the Australian premiere of “Augmented Games,” a large-scale interactive gaming experience by Moment Factory, combining physical activity with digital gameplay. The 1,800 square meters of flooring at the Ridley Centre – one of the event spaces within the multifunctional Adelaide Showground complex – were transformed into 8 digital playfields where players of all ages competed in casual and tournament modes, testing their agility, memory and reflexes. What makes it unique? The experience uses projection mapping, motion tracking and responsive soundscapes allowing participants to control large-scale visuals in real time.
A Word from The Founders And Creative Directors of Illuminate Adelaide
“At its heart, Illuminate Adelaide is about creating moments of connection, curiosity and wonder,” said the festival’s co-founders and creative directors Lee Cumberlidge and Rachael Azzopardi. “Seeing people of all ages coming together across the city throughout winter has been incredibly rewarding, and we’re enormously grateful to the artists, partners, venues, staff, volunteers and audiences who helps make this year’s event so memorable.”
