Imagine standing on the roof of Big Ben or at the top of the Statue of Liberty and then plunging vertically at 140kmph. In the United States, a brand new rollercoaster delivers exactly this. “Tormenta Rampaging Run” opened to the public at Six Flags Over Texas on July 9, as the centerpiece of the park’s 65th anniversary season.

Designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, it is the world’s first giga dive coaster, which means in industry jargon that it is characterized by a suspended pause at the top of the lift hill before the vertical drop (dive) and that it exceeds 91m in height (giga). The combination of the 2 features is something never seen before, and as stressed by Sophie Bolliger, president of B&M, “it introduces a completely new ride category, blending giga coaster heights with the fun and thrill of a dive coaster.”

Added to this, are 6 other world records. At over 94m tall and 1,280m long, and with a top speed of 140kmph, “Tormenta Rampaging Run” is in fact the tallest, longest and fastest dive coaster in the world.

It also has the tallest vertical coaster loop (54.5m), and the highest beyond-vertical drop, as once the train is finally released from its 3-second pause, it drops riders into a 95-degree drop as they plunge 87m toward the earth.

Finally, “Tormenta Rampaging Run”’s first inversion is a nearly 66.5m tall Immelmann element, the highest in the world – a fighter jet-like maneuver that takes the train into a half loop, then a half roll before traveling in the opposite direction.

The brand-new rollercoaster is located in the Spain section of the park. The area surrounding depicts an old and secluded Spanish village amid its annual ‘Festival Taurino’ inspired by the famous running of the bulls in Pamplona. And the rollercoaster’s 4 inversions, its sharp turns, exhilarating drops and airtime moments are intended to replicate the fierce strength, determination and speed of the bull.

“Six Flags Over Texas has always been a leader in creating unforgettable experiences, and with Tormenta Rampaging Run we are soaring to new heights,” said Pete Carmichael, park president.
